Type 106 Barbican Estate flats

Type 106 is a three-storey, two-bedroom, penthouse maisonette in Willoughby House. Instead of the standard 16’9″ window frontage, Type 106 flats are narrower with only 13 feet. You enter the flat off the building’s central corridor and you take steps up to the living room. The living area has full-width windows and sliding doors onto the balcony. The kitchen is a large corner of the living room, but slightly more compact and open to the living room than in other penthouses in view of the narrower frontage. There is a half flight of stairs up to the internal corridor leading to the bedroom. At the top of these stairs is a separate WC. The corridor leads to a further half flight up to the first bedroom and the bathroom, which is virtually en suite. Finally, there is a flight up to a studio/second bedroom at the top.

There’s only one Type 106. They had room for eight Type 105 penthouses along the top of Willoughby House and there wasn’t quite room enough for a ninth, so they slipped in a slimmed down version and called it a Type 106.

There are 11 different types of penthouse maisonette in Willoughby House – far more than in any other house – and most are very similar. They are Types 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, 108, 109110, 111, 112 and 115. Type 106 is similar in layout to Type 94 and Type 95, but with the extra top room.
