Versions of the Barbican scheme

Rome was not built in a day; and the Barbican Estate was not designed in a day.

There were several iterations of the design over a period of years from 1955, when Chamberlin Powell and Bon first put forward their imaginative ideas, to 1959, when a refined and extended scheme was approved and planning permission was obtained to construct the estate. Even after that there were to be changes in the design, some of them quite major.
