Type 111 Barbican Estate flats

Type 111 is a three-storey, two-bedroom, penthouse maisonette in Willoughby House. The flat is entered on the middle floor where the living area and the kitchen are placed. The architects must have run slightly out of space. Instead of the standard 16’9″ window frontage, Type 111 is narrower with only 13 feet. The living area has full-width windows and sliding doors onto the balcony. The kitchen is a large corner of the living room, but slightly more compact and open to the living room than in other similar types. Steps up take you to a large ‘lounge/study’ as the City originally designated it, but presumably usually a second bedroom. Steps down take you to a separate WC and then down again to a bathroom and a bedroom.

There is only one Type 111 flat, in Willoughby House.

There are 11 different types of penthouse maisonette in Willoughby House – far more than in any other house – and most are very similar. They are Types 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, 108, 109110, 111, 112 and 115. Types 108-112 are all entered on the middle floor.

In layout it is very similar to the more usual Type 110, but the living area and the lounge/study are 4 feet narrower.
