Type 51 is a two-bedroom, sub-podium maisonette. The main door is at upper flat level and it opens into a hall which has stairs down to the lower level. From the hall there is another door into the large living area. At the back of this area is a narrower dining area and then the kitchen. The stairs go down to a lower level where there is first a separate WC and then a bathroom. Then there are two bedrooms.

There are six Type 51 flats in Defoe House. The only similar flats are the Type 84 maisonettes in Speed House. They are higher up than the sub-podium flats in Thomas More House, with relatively small windows, facing onto the overgrown path between Defoe House and Thomas More Garden. The flats have no access to the garden.
