Type 104 Barbican Estate flats

Type 104 is a three-storey, two-bedroom, penthouse maisonette in Willoughby House. You enter the flat off the building’s central corridor and you take steps up to the living room. The living room is 16’9″ wide. But it only has windows and sliding doors onto the balcony along half the frontage; the rest is a normal wall. The kitchen is a large corner of the living room. There is a half flight of stairs up to the internal corridor leading to the first bedroom. At the top of these stairs is the bathroom and then a separate WC. The corridor leads to a further half flight up to the first bedroom. A second half flight of stairs takes you up to the penthouse ‘studio/bedroom’ which is almost as large as the living room.

There are two Type 104s in Willoughby House.

There are 11 different types of penthouse maisonette in Willoughby House – far more than in any other house – and most are very similar. They are Types 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, 108, 109110, 111, 112 and 115.

Type 104 is almost identical to Type 103 – the difference is a matter of inches in some rooms .The main difference is that it does not have the Type 103’s full-width living room windows. The Type 92 maisonette has a similar window arrangement.
