Type 48 Blake Tower, Barbican Estate

Type 48 is a one-bedroom flat type found on floors 08-10 and 12-13 of Blake Tower. In fact, there are two identical mirror versions, side by side – Type 48A and 48B. Type 48A is the layout for Flat Nos. 81, 91, 101, 121 and 131 on the east side of the building. Type 48B is the layout for the adjoining mirror Flat Nos. 84, 94, 104, 124 and 134 on the west side of the building. (The equivalent flats on floor 11 – Flat Nos. 111 and 114 – are slightly different.)

To be exact, the plans show the 48B flats (the ‘4’s) as having a slightly larger (and differently laid out) bathroom beside the entrance door than that of the 48A flats (the ‘1’s). But the developers grouped them together as the same, and I have followed their system.

Type 48 flats are at the front of Blake Tower (the Fann Street end). The Type 48A flats (the ‘1’s) occupy the north-east corner of the building, and their windows face east. The Type 48B flats (the ‘4’s) occupy the north-west corner of the building, and their windows face west.

Entering the flat off the communal entrance corridor, there is a bathroom on one side. There is a combined bath and shower and a WC. Turning the other way instead, there is a lobby area leading to the bedroom. The bedroom has corner windows. The lobby area turns to join the living/dining/kitchen area. The kitchen is placed along the wall abutting the two-bedroom flat to the south. The living area has windows along the whole of the eastern wall (‘A’ types/the ‘1’s) or the western wall (‘B’ types/the ‘4’s) and the corner facing north.
