Type M3B Barbican Estate flats

Type M3B is a two-bedroom three-storey penthouse maisonette found in Ben Jonson House and Bunyan Court. The Type M3A and the Type M3B account for most of the penthouse maisonettes in Ben Jonson House and Bunyan Court. Types M3A and M3B are virtually identical except that the M3B is marginally shorter with slightly smaller bedrooms.

There is an entrance floor on the 5th floor which takes up roughly one half of the width of the building on the north side of the central corridor. The flat’s entrance door from the corridor opens into a hall which contains the stairs to the upper – 6th – floor of the flat. Beyond the hall is the bathroom and then a bedroom.

Going back to where we were on the entrance hall, you take the (lovely open-tread mahogany) internal stairs  and you emerge in the middle of the 6th floor level which takes up the entire width of the building. At the front, looking south, there is a living area with views into the Barbican estate. At the back, looking north, there is a dining room, with views towards Golden Lane. Between them, in the middle, is a kitchen.

The stairs go up again to a barrel-vaulted double-height room which can be a study or an extra bedroom.

There are 22 Type M3Bs on the 5th, 6th and penthouse floors. In Bunyan Court there are 8 M3As. The central corridor is not quite central. On the shallower side is usually a Type F2C studio flat. On the deeper side, is the lower floor of a Type M3A or M3B.

The Type M3A and the Type M3B account for most of the penthouse maisonettes in Ben Jonson House.
