Type 8A Barbican Estate flats

Type 8A is the main Barbican flat type found on the ‘A’ side of Shakespeare Tower. Type 8A has a living room, a breakfast room, three bedrooms, (4/5 rooms) a kitchen, a utility room, a bathroom with WC, and a shower room with WC.

What distinguishes Type 8A is that, instead of the ‘dining room which Types 8B and 8C have between the kitchen and the balcony, ‘Type 8A has a ‘breakfast room’ which is roughly half the size. This is due to the unfortunate position of the flat’s entrance door, which reduces the available space beyond the standard kitchen. There is the same issue with the Type 1A flats in Cromwell and Lauderdale Towers.

Types 1A, 1B and 1C, which are the standard types of flats in Cromwell and Lauderdale Towers, are ‘four bedroom’ flats (although in 1A’s case the fourth bedroom is called a ‘dining room’ ). 8A, 8B and 8C flats in Shakespeare Tower, on the other hand, are ‘three bedroom’ flats. But the Shakespeare Tower flats have a larger living room and a larger third bedroom than their corresponding 1A, 1B and 1C counterparts in Cromwell and Lauderdale Towers.

The angle at which Type 8C cuts across the end of 8A means that the the main bedroom is squeezed into a triangular shape.

Type 8A flats have rooms along the south-facing side of Shakespeare Tower, and balconies looking east.
