Type 2A Barbican Estate flats

Type 2A is a three-bedroom Barbican flat type for many flats on the upper floors of Cromwell Tower and Lauderdale Tower in the Barbican Estate. Types 1A, 1B and 1C are the most frequently encountered flat types in these two blocks, but mainly on the lower floors. Types 2A, 2B and 2C flats replace them on 5 upper floors of Cromwell Tower and 8 upper floors of Lauderdale Tower.

Type 2A has an enlarged living room, a breakfast room, three bedrooms, (4/5 rooms) a kitchen, a utility room, a bathroom with WC, and a shower room with WC.

What distinguishes Type 2A from Type 1A is that the living room and the dining room of the Type 1A layout have been combined into one larger living area in the Type 2A layout.

(In fact, what distinguishes all Type ‘A’s from ‘B’s and ‘C’s – is that there is not enough space between the kitchen and the balcony for a room big enough to be called a dining room . So in the ‘A’s the smaller space is called a breakfast area.)

The angle at which Type 2C cuts across the end of a Type 2A means that the the main bedroom is squeezed into a triangle shape.

In Cromwell Tower the ‘2A’ flats have rooms along the east-facing side, and balconies looking north. In Lauderdale Tower they have rooms along the west-facing side, and balconies looking north.
