Type 1A Barbican Estate flat

Type 1A is the main Barbican flat type found on the ‘A’ side of Cromwell and Lauderdale Towers in the Barbican Estate. Flats of this type have flat numbers ending in ‘1’.

Type 1A has a living room, a dining room, a breakfast room, three bedrooms, (5/6 rooms) a kitchen, a utility room, a bathroom with WC, and a shower room with WC.

Type 1A may appear to be one room short of its neighbours on Barbican tower block floors. In Types 1B and 1C, there is room for the kitchen and a dining room, before reaching the balcony. But in the 1A configuration, due to the position of the flat’s entrance door, there is only room beyond the kitchen for a rather paltry breakfast area. In the 1960s everyone needed a separate dining room, so what would otherwise be a fourth bedroom was re-designated as a dining room. So the 1A officially only has three bedrooms. But in reality it has four bedrooms, like the others, but a less expandable living area.

The angle at which Type 1C flat cuts across the end of a Type 1A flat means that the main bedroom is squeezed into a triangular shape.

In Cromwell Tower, Type 1A flats have rooms along the east-facing side, and balconies looking north. In Lauderdale Tower, they have rooms along the west-facing side, and balconies looking north.
