Type 16 Barbican Estate flats

Type 16 is a one-bedroom, upper level, garden flat. Type 16 is the standard layout of flats at below podium but upper-garden-level in Thomas More and Andrewes Houses. In layout they are roughly similar to the standard flats in the floors above them. But Type 16s do not have balconies or sliding doors which open onto them in standard flats.

Thomas More House has 24 Type 16 flats which look down onto the garden, and Andrewes House has 17 which look down onto the lake. In Andrewes House the Type 16 flats are on one level only (with a Type 78 and a Type 79 at the Brandon Mews end). In Thomas More House there are first and second floor levels with eight Type 16 flats at each level.

The flat is accessed via stairs down from the podium level. The door opens into the centre of the flat and a hallway. Opposite is the kitchen. Next to it is the combined bathroom and WC. Beyond the bathroom at the end of the hallway is the bedroom. At the other end of the hallway is a large living area composed like two squares which do not quite line up.
