Type 8C Barbican Estate flats

Type 8C is the main Barbican flat type found on the ‘C’ side of Shakespeare Tower. Type 8C has a living room, a dining area, three bedrooms, (5 rooms) a kitchen, a utility room, a bathroom and WC, and a shower room and WC.

What distinguishes Type 8C is that it has the largest living area (by about one foot) opening onto a rectangular balcony space. In addition, the flat has a dining area which extends into – and also has a door onto – the balcony. Type 8C has the best proportioned main bedroom of the three flat types.

Types 1A, 1B and 1C, which are the standard types of Barbican flats in Cromwell and Lauderdale Towers, are ‘four bedroom’ flats (although in 1A’s case the fourth bedroom is called a ‘dining room’ ). 8A, 8B and 8C flats in Shakespeare Tower, on the other hand, are ‘three bedroom’ flats. But the Shakespeare Tower flats have a larger living room and a larger third bedroom than their corresponding 1A, 1B and 1C counterparts in Cromwell and Lauderdale Towers.

The Type 8C flats have rooms along the north-facing side of Shakespeare Tower, and balconies looking west.
