In 1919, Gropius became director of what was to be called the Bauhaus, and which became the leader in modern design. The teachers included Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Marcel Breuer. Gropius based his designs on machinery.
Historical influences or traditions in building styles were rigorously excluded. Wherever possible new materials such as metal, concrete and glass were employed. The buildings were to impress by their boldness and logic, not by their ornamentation.
