There were 42 fountains originally, but far fewer now. The fountains are an essential part of the aeration of the lakes to enable the fish to breathe, but actually they don’t have to be above the surface. The fountains could be below water level, so as not to be noisy, but residents wanted fountains they could see and hear. I would like to meet these residents - the fountains are as infuriatingly noisy as the Canada geese.

Really? This must have been some busy-body residents from far away on the north of the estate because the fountains create a background of noise such as they used in Northern Ireland to force confessions out of terrorist suspects. (To be fair, the City have turned them down a bit I think, since they don't seem to be as loud in recent years, or maybe they have caused me loss of hearing.) They are turned off prompty at 7.30 in the evening.
