There were 42 fountains originally in the lake, but far fewer now. The fountains play an essential part in the aeration of the lake water to enable the fish to breathe.

Actually the fountains don’t need to be above the surface. The fountains could be below water level, so as not to be noisy. But according to the City, residents wanted fountains they could see and hear.

Really? This must have been some busy-body residents from far away on the north of the estate because the fountains create a background of noise such as the police used in Northern Ireland to force confessions out of terrorist suspects.

To be fair, the City have turned them down a bit, I think. They don’t seem to be as loud in recent years, or maybe they have caused me irreversible hearing loss. They are turned off in the evening at least.
